Llamas belong to the camelid group of animals whose ancestors the guanaco originated from the Great plains of North America and eventually migrated to South America.
They are similar to alpacas but are larger and stronger with banana shaped ears. They were originally bred for their wool and meat. They were widely used for carrying packs of up to 50-75 lbs for up to 10 miles.
The Llama today is mainly kept for their beauty and protection. Once a llama bonds with your other animals they will fiercely protect them from any predator entering their area.
Alpaca belongs to the camelid family and originated from South America in the Andes mountains of Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru. They are closely related to the Llamas but they are smaller. They have been domesticated from their wild relatives, the Vicuna.
There are two distinct breeds of Alpaca. the more common Huacaya and the more rare Suri. The difference is in their fiber (fleece or fur-hair). Which is longer and silky in the Suri. These beautiful animals were originally domesticated for their fiber which is used to make clothing accessories.
In more recent times, they have been bred mainly for their beauty and gentleness. They are quiet, clean, great with children and get along with all of your other animals in your household.
Are flightless birds that belong to the Ratite family along with its close relative the ostrich. It's the 2nd largest bird on earth, originated in Australia. They can reach heights of 6 feet and weight up to 120 lbs. Females are larger and heavier and will often fight for the male and will lay several cluthches of eggs for the male to sit on them and do the incubation
During the incubation the male will not eat. Eggs hatch around 8 weeks after laying. Emus come in 3 colors. Standard brown, blonde or white. These birds are super curious and will follow you around often pecking at your watch or clothes. They are harmless and curious. Your home/acreage would not be complete without these beautiful pre historic creatures roaming around.
The largest flightless bird and member of the ratite family is the Ostrich. They can reach a height up to 9 feet, weigh up to 320 lbs and run up to 44 miles /hour. They have been bred for their meat, skin, feathers, eggs and oil. The eggs incubation period ranges from 42-58 days. The male does the brooding in the nest he built himself and will sit and protect all the eggs.
Males will breed with up to 7 females. Females can lay up to 60 eggs or more during the breeding season from March to September. Their lifespan is about 40 years. Camels are in the camelid group of animals that originated from either Central Asia or Africa and Australia. There are two types the Hump or dromedary is from Africa/Australia and was brought to Australia in the 1800's to help in transportation and build railroads. Once the raildroads were built, Camels were no longer needed and were abandoned in the wild. Later they grew to great numbers. The bactrim or 2 humped camel is less common. Camels can grow up to 8 feet tall and weight 800-1500 lbs. Contrary to popular belief, the hump is used to store fat, not water. Camels are now bred for milk, meat, riding, and pack animals. they can go without water or food for weeks, living off the fat stored in their humps. They can lose up to 30% of their body weight when they find water, they can drink up to 40 gallons.
Are beautifully colored large parrots native to Central America,South America and the Caribbean. They have large beaks and long tails. They eat a variety of foods including seeds,nuts,fruits and vegetables. Macaws mate for life and the female will lay 2 -4 eggs and incubate them for the next 4 weeks. They have a wide vocabulary if properly trained.
